A note from Erin
It only took a few months in my self-publishing career to realize there's a big difference between the art of writing and the business of writing. Marketing had always been a dirty word to me. But I wrapped my head around Facebook ads, learned the beauty of "perma-free", and KDP select. After climbing the steep (but not impossible) learning curve, I hit a wall.
"I don't know if my Facebook ads are actually worth the money?" I remember moaning.
"Well, what's your actual return on investment?" my husband asked.
"I don't know. The ad is going to a free book, so..."
"Okay, but how many people are buying the second and third?"
crickets
You see, I rely heavily on the left side of my brain while Jamie exists almost exclusively in the right of his. I made decisions with my gut, but never paid attention to their level of success. He couldn't understand why I hadn't set up an intricate Excel spreadsheet to track as much as possible.
My brain just doesn't work that way. When I did begin to keep track of my buy-through rates, the cost of ads v. sales, and the success of promotions, I was then overwhelmed with the amount of time it took.
"I just want to write..."
We started working together to create something simple that would give me all the info I needed. With one glance, I can see how well my series are performing, what ads are doing well and what ones might need replacing. I can make informed decisions about how to run my business without spending time calculating and recalculating numbers.
There's a lot of information we aren't given as self-publishers. We don't know what percentage of people buy our books after viewing them, how many click to read inside and then decide, "Never mind." How many eyes see our covers and move on? We will never know...
It's vital we use the information we do have access to, wisely.
